
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that at the Wednesday EU-Western Balkans summit held in Brussels, Kosovo and Serbia were asked to fulfill their commitments within the dialogue facilitated by the European Union.
In addressing the press after the summit, Von der Leyen said that both countries have made important steps this year with the Ohrid agreement, which is expected to be implemented by both sides.
" For both Kosovo and Serbia, it is the way forward and the fulfillment of commitments within the EU dialogue. They have made important steps forward this year with the Ohrid agreement, which must now be implemented, and I very much welcome the reduction of tensions in the north of Kosovo, in particular for the preparation for early municipal elections , Von der Leyen said.
She also spoke about the countries of the region and the expansion of the EU, saying that they want to open negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia as soon as possible, while they will open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina after meeting the membership criteria.
" When it comes to Montenegro, it is a new moment for the country with the new government to get back on the path towards membership ," she added.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has said that they want to extend cooperation with all the countries of the Western Balkans.
He added that the expansion plan proposed by the European Commission was presented, which brings the countries of the Western Balkans closer to the European Union.
" We want to cooperate in the fight against disinformation and in the field of migration. In this summit, we emphasized the acceleration of the Western Balkans' rapprochement with the European Union ", said Michel.
