Hearing in The Hague, Selimi: Kosovo's history cannot be rewritten in a
Rexhep Selimi

Rexhep Selimi stated at the court in The Hague that the history of Kosovo cannot be determined in a courtroom. He linked his position to the developments of the war in Kosovo and Serbia's actions towards Albanians during that period.

Selimi said that the Kosovo Liberation Army was not a political party, but a military structure. He added that even if the war had continued after 1999, it would have remained a part of it. According to him, NATO's intervention and the support of Western countries were related to the circumstances of that time.

Speaking about the prosecution's request for severe sentences, he stated that they aim to prevent them from returning to Kosovo. Selimi stressed that the timing of his return depends on the decision of the trial panel, but added that he will return to a free Kosovo.

He demanded that the verdict against him and other former KLA leaders be based on administered evidence and not on allegations. According to him, justice must guarantee that victims are not harmed by decisions that are not based on the truth.

In conclusion, Selimi thanked the defense team and the citizens who believe in his innocence. He stated that he feels lucky to have contributed to his country.

The trial of former KLA leaders is continuing in The Hague.

Selimi: The KLA was not a political party. Even if the war in Kosovo had not stopped in Kosovo in '99 and continued until today, I would still be a soldier of my homeland if I had not been killed by now because the chances were real. We did the right thing and today I will do the same. That is why NATO supported us, and your countries. The prosecution in its file is demanding severe punishment. So long that they essentially aim to permanently prevent us from returning to our country. The time when I will return to Kosovo is in your hands but the prosecution should have understood that whenever I return, I will return to a free Kosovo.

During war, many things happen, there is chaos, fear, pain accumulated over the years. War always leaves its consequences and victims. Victims need justice. Justice that is not based on the truth hurts the victims a second time. Decisions should be based on what has been proven, not on what has been alleged. Finally, I want to thank our defense teams and my team, in defending the law. I want to thank our fellow citizens who believe in our innocence. Their support has made these shackles not feel like a burden to me. They say that people who do something good for themselves are lucky people and I am one of them.
