The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, delivers a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg this Wednesday. This speech in the EP is the first since the declaration of Independence of Kosovo on February 17, 2008.
Osmani started this historic speech with the words of former President Ibrahim Rugova: "Freedom, Independence, Democracy". Osmani recalled the period before 25 years ago when President Rugova, then winner of the Sakharov Prize, gave a speech in the EP.
" President Rugova considered the award as recognition of the sacrifice of the people of Kosovo and their struggle for freedom, but more importantly he used this very platform to ask for the support of the deputies at that time to unite in the name of the values that this Union represents. He requested that Europe unite in defense of an oppressed people", Osmani said while adding that this speech gave hope to the people of Kosovo.
"Europe had not only opened its doors to President Rugova, but had opened its hearts and minds to a systematically oppressed people. Today, standing here in Strasbourg, I have the honor of being the first president of the independent Republic of Kosovo to speak before the European Parliament, to thank you for the immense and continuous contribution that this institution has made to freedom, democracy ours and independence ", she said.
The president said that Kosovo is the most pro-European country in the region.
"Kosovo is independent and free. Kosovo is Europe, EU values are a fundamental part of our society. We walk side by side with European values, we will stand by Europe", Osmani said, among other things.
She further requested that the EU countries that are close to Kosovo.
During her visit to Strasbourg, Osmani also held meetings at the Council of Europe. Kosovo applied to become a member of this organization a year ago. Last month, the formal procedure for Kosovo's admission to this institution began.
