Over 80,000 votes have been found to have been manipulated, following the recount of votes in Kosovo.
Eugen Cakolli from KDI emphasized that the possibility for citizens to vote for up to 10 candidates makes the electoral process more vulnerable to errors and abuses.
"The increase in the number of preferential votes to 10 candidates, together with the centralization of counting in Municipal Counting Centers, has made the process much more vulnerable to abuse. When the data is processed by a small number of people, who in some cases turn out to be family members or close associates of the candidates, interference can produce major deviations in the results," said Cakolli.
He explained that in Kosovo there were about 900 thousand valid votes for political entities, while due to preferential voting for up to 10 candidates, 6.8 million votes were registered for candidates. “This means that on average each voter marked about 7 candidates on the ballot,” he added.
From the recount of over 50% of polling stations at the CNR, so far, around 80 thousand candidate votes have resulted as incorrect and incorrectly counted at the Municipal Counting Centers.
Of these, after the recount, 47,619 votes were removed from candidates because they had been added to them during the initial count, while 32,018 votes were added to candidates after the recount, after they had been mistakenly removed earlier.
Of the "bag" of 80 thousand manipulated votes, about 40 thousand belong to PDK candidates, about 15 thousand to LVV, about 11 thousand to LDK, and about 4 thousand to AAK.
According to the municipalities, over 80% of these votes come from the municipality of Prizren alone. Next are Malisheva and Podujeva, with only 10% recounted so far.
