Legendary "Die Hard" actor Bruce Willis is currently living under permanent care, away from his family, as a result of worsening frontotemporal dementia.
The news was announced by his wife, Emma Heming Willis, in a touching interview for the ABC special, Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey.
Emma, who has two daughters with the actor - Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11 - said the decision to place Bruce in a home with 24-hour care was "one of the hardest" she has ever made.
"I knew that, first and foremost, Bruce would want this for our daughters. He would want them to live in a home that was tailored to their needs, not his," she said.
Although they no longer live under the same roof, Emma stressed that they are "there very often" and that they consider that house their "second home."
"It's a home filled with love, warmth and laughter. It's wonderful to see how many of Bruce's friends continue to come to visit - they bring life and joy," she said.
Bruce's ex-wife, Demi Moore, and their daughters – Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 31 – also visit the actor regularly, maintaining a family bond during this difficult time.
Emma, 49, said Bruce's diagnosis was a difficult and often lonely experience. She spoke of the anxiety and worry she faced, citing the need to take care of every safety detail at home due to the behaviors associated with dementia.
“Dementia patients can be disturbed by loud noises, so I stopped organizing playdates or sleepovers for the girls. Not only was I isolated, but I isolated our whole family – the girls too. And that was intentional. It was a difficult time, a very difficult time,” she said.
Despite the difficulties, Emma is receiving treatment for depression and is grateful for the small moments with Bruce, saying the emotional connection still exists.
"When we're with him, he lights up. He holds our hands, hugs us, kisses us. He feels our presence and responds. That's all I need," she said.
"I don't need him to know me as his wife, it doesn't matter the wedding date. I just want to feel like we still have a connection – and we do."
Bruce Willis retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, which was later confirmed to be frontotemporal dementia. His last role was in the sci-fi action film Assassin, released in March 2023.
