Renowned actress Whoopi Goldberg has reacted publicly after her name was mentioned in recently released documents related to convicted sex offender financier Jeffrey Epstein.
During Tuesday's broadcast of The View, Goldberg openly declared:
"In the name of transparency, yes - my name is on file!"
She read an email from May 2013 that mentioned her name in connection with a request for a plane to travel to Monaco to attend a charity event. According to the email, the request for a plane was declined by Epstein, who replied: “No, thank you.”
Goldberg stressed that she had no relationship with him.
"I wasn't his girlfriend, I wasn't his friend. I was even too old for him. People are trying to unfairly implicate me," she said, adding that she has never boarded a plane and that the claims that are circulating are untrue.
Her co-host, Joy Behar, also intervened, emphasizing that mentioning a name in the documents does not necessarily imply direct involvement, as the file contains many names mentioned in emails or third-party communications.
Goldberg has previously been critical of the way society reacted to the Epstein scandal, pointing out that many people - including women - were complicit by not reacting to what was happening.
Jeffrey Epstein was initially investigated in 2005 and later pleaded guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution, serving 13 months in prison. In 2019, he was charged with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. Epstein died in prison that same year, while awaiting trial. His close associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sex trafficking.
