The former brother-in-law of Spain's Queen Letizia claims he once had an affair with her. He even claims that he was ready to marry Letizia before her current husband, the King of Spain, Felipe.
These claims of the ex-husband of Letizia's sister have caused an uproar in the Spanish media.
It all started after a post on Jaime del Burgo that had a photo of Letitia about 15 years ago, posing in front of a mirror. The same post was captioned with the following text:
"My love. I have put on your scarf. He protects me. I'm counting the hours until we meet again. I love you. Yours".
However, when this post caught the attention of the Spanish media, del Burgo deleted it, as he did the same for all the content of his X account.
Del Burgo is seen claiming he was ready to marry Letizia in 2004, while she was still a journalist. According to the same claims, Del Burgo was supposed to propose to Letizia over dinner at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, but on that date the future queen of Spain allegedly told him that she had met a man (ie Felipe) who would it changed his life.
Del Burgo's claims have been met with skepticism by the Spanish media as he has previously threatened to reveal alleged secrets of Spain's royal family.
The 53-year-old Spaniard, who lives in Switzerland with his wife, Swedish-born lawyer Lucia Diaz Lilleström, is no stranger to Spanish business circles as he appears to have businesses in Morocco, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, the US, France and Germany.
A month ago he published a book entitled "Letitia and I" in which he tried to explain his relationship with the Spanish monarchy. In the book, the 53-year-old claims he met the current Queen of Spain in 2000, suggesting that despite her marriage to Felipe, they continued dating.
He was actually a best man at Letitia's wedding to Felipe in 2004, but shortly afterwards he had an affair with the sister of Spain's current queen, Thelma, whom he married in 2012 before finally splitting for good in 2014 .
