A theory presented at the general assembly of the European Geosciences Union proposes a new reading of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy." According to American scholar Timothy Burbery, the description of Hell could be linked to a major geological event and not just religious symbolism.

Burbery, who studies geomythology, argues that the figure of Satan in Dante's work could represent a giant asteroid that crashed into Earth. He says the object entered the southern hemisphere and penetrated close to the planet's core, creating a large funnel-shaped crater similar to the Inferno described in the poem.

According to his interpretation, the material ejected from the collision formed Mount Purgatory on the other side of the Earth. The researcher compares this scenario to the Chicxulub impact, which is associated with the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago.

He brings up another element from the poem, the nine circles of Hell, which he connects to the concentric structures that appear in impact craters on celestial bodies such as the Moon and Venus.

Burbery describes Dante's "Satan" as an object similar to the Hoba meteorite, the largest meteorite discovered on Earth, weighing about 64 tons.

The hypothesis has only been presented at a scientific conference and has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal. For this reason, the theory remains at the interpretation level and is not yet considered confirmed by the scientific community.
