A 21-year-old University of Kentucky student, Laken Snelling, was arrested and charged with abuse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing a birth after it was discovered that she had given birth to a baby and then put the body in a closet.
The baby was found dead at the scene, stuffed into a black garbage bag.
Police were called Wednesday morning to a home on Park Avenue, Lexington, after a report of a dead baby.
The baby was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. According to the arrest warrant, the newborn's body was wrapped in a towel and placed in a garbage bag.
Snelling admitted to giving birth and said she hid it by cleaning up any evidence, including used cleaning supplies, which she placed with the body in a black bag. The cause of death has not yet been determined by the Fayette County Medical Examiner's Office.
Snelling is a student at the University of Kentucky, in the Interdisciplinary Disability Studies program and a member of the STUNT acrobatics team for three years.
She is also a participant in beauty contests, with an active presence on social media, where in June she shared a video saying that her dream was to become a mother and start a family.
Abortion has been almost completely banned in Kentucky since 2022, with exceptions only for cases where the woman's life or vital organ is at risk. Snelling is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center, while the investigation continues by the Lexington Police Department's Special Victims Unit.
