Edon Zhegrova's decision not to play for the Kosovo national team in two very important matches for the qualifiers for the "2026 World Cup", specifically against Switzerland which is currently being played and against Sweden, has caused strong discussions. Sports journalist, Qeqa Krelani has written a long article on social networks, criticizing the 26-year-old striker:
" Zhegrova's father used to say: 'My son never sleeps when he comes to play for Kosovo, he's always the first to get on the plane.' And where is the son today, when Kosovo has the two biggest matches in history? With a 20 million transfer, even a private plane is not a problem - Pandev of Macedonia paid for every match. Isak of Sweden signed a record contract with Liverpool, on the same day that Zhegrova signed with Juventus. Isak comes to play in 'Fadil Vokrri' for Sweden while Zhegrova doesn't come for the two most important matches of Kosovo. The reason? 'He hasn't played for 9 months, he needs time.'
Then why was he invited to the list, and withdrew within 24 hours?! Don't make movies. No club can stop him from playing for the National Team when the dates are set by FIFA. Even if you are in the stands with him, you show how much you care for Kosovo. All Juventus players have gone to their national teams - injured and not injured. Only here has the Kosovo Messi asked to withdraw so that he can get in shape for Juventus. This only happens in Kosovo - that the player comes when he wants, and doesn't come when he doesn't want.
It never occurs to me that our players should be withdrawn from the squad, which was prepared for foreign teams. I say again: Zhegrova is the best player of the last 50 years of Kosovo. But he is the most unserious player, without sportsmanship, without discipline, and he puts the interest of the club twice over the interest of Kosovo. The scenes with the Kosovo flag on Instagram, this and many others have nothing but Hollywood movies .
