Ecuadorian football club Astillero FC, which competes in the Second Division, has been at the center of public debate following the publication of a journalistic investigation by investigative journalist Andersson Boscan. In his report, Boscan raises suspicions of serious financial irregularities and possible links of the club to international criminal networks, including what he describes as the “Albanian mafia.”
According to Ecuadorian media, the investigation reveals a significant discrepancy between the club's declared expenses and income. Boscan claims that during 2023, Astillero FC recorded around 3.5 million US dollars in expenses, while the declared income did not exceed 100 thousand dollars. The difference of more than 3 million dollars is considered by the journalist as one of the most problematic points of the report.
The investigation highlights that high levels of spending were maintained in subsequent years. For 2024, the club's expenses are said to have reached around $2.7 million, while for 2025 around $1.8 million. For the salaries of the professional team alone, the annual expenses are estimated at around $500,000.
Boscan also questions the declared sources of funding, especially the alleged income from renting sports fields. According to his analysis, this income is difficult to justify in operational and economic terms.
In the report, the journalist links the possible origin of the financing to Héctor Pesantes Sangurima, founder and former director of Astillero FC. He links Pesantes Sangurima to the private security company Agusegpro, which, according to Boscan, has been mentioned by the State Attorney General's Office in an investigation regarding suspicions of collaboration with an international criminal network linked to the Albanian mafia.
The journalist emphasizes that these are allegations and suspicions under investigation, and not final decisions by judicial bodies.
Following the publication of the report, Astillero Football Club reacted with an official statement, categorically denying any connection to illegal activities or criminal networks. In its response, the club describes the accusations as unfounded and emphasizes that they damage the image, reputation and integrity of the institution and its members.
