United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Iran's national team is welcome to participate in this summer's FIFA World Cup, but added that, in his opinion, their participation would not be appropriate due to security concerns.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump said that the Iranian team's presence at the tournament could pose a risk to their security.
" The Iranian national team is welcome at the World Cup, but I really don't believe it's appropriate for them to be there, for their lives and safety ," he wrote.
The statement comes at a time when Iran's participation in the World Cup has been at the center of debate. This year's tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali declared on Wednesday that Iran will not participate in the competition.
According to him, the decision is related to the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who, according to Iranian authorities, was killed in joint US and Israeli airstrikes in Tehran on February 28.
" Considering that the US has killed our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup ," Donyamali told Iranian state television.
