Social networks are not forgiving. FIFA released several promotional posters for next summer's World Cup. Among them was one that represented the qualified national teams and their symbolic players. Messi, Mbappe and Haaland were in the foreground, but the omission of Cristiano Ronaldo was not received well at all. Especially not by the millions of fans of the Portuguese star around the world.
The poster featured everyone... except CR7. In the first version published by FIFA, the main players for the already qualified countries were chosen: Messi for Argentina, Mbappe for France, Harry Kane for England, Haaland for Norway, but not Ronaldo. In his place, FIFA had placed Bruno Fernandes, the Manchester United midfielder and one of Portugal's leaders. A choice that did not please fans at all, given Ronaldo's global weight.
The result? A "storm" of comments on social networks, bursts of irony and accusations against FIFA. The administrator of the site was forced to remove the poster and publish a new version, this time with Cristiano Ronaldo in the background, in a proud pose, pointing his finger towards the horizon, just like when he celebrates in front of the stands.
In the foreground, however, the world champions still stand: Messi's face, Dibu Martinez's iconic save against Kolo Muani and Montiel's decisive penalty in the 2022 final. Meanwhile, a new duel has begun on the networks: the one between Argentine and Portuguese fans, between fans of "The Flea" and those of CR7. The conflict has just begun...
