During a press conference alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, US President Donald Trump told reporters he was “not aware” that Russia is currently banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions. However, Trump later raised the possibility that its return to these tournaments could serve as “leverage” to persuade the Eastern European country to end its controversial conflict with neighboring Ukraine.
“ I didn’t know that ,” Trump admitted, expressing surprise at the sanction during the presentation of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Trump then continued to reflect out loud, wondering if involvement in the world of soccer could become a tool for pressuring for peace.
Gianni Infantino, sitting next to Trump, confirmed the situation, explaining: " They are excluded for the moment, but we hope that something happens and peace comes, so that Russia can return ."
Trump then reiterated his belief that peace is "possible," adding: " It might be a good incentive, right? We want them to stop the conflict. We want everything to stop. 5,000 young people being killed every week, it's unbelievable ."
