Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has come to the defense of Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism surrounding the possibility of the veteran striker's inclusion in the 2026 World Cup.
Some fans have expressed doubts about whether the 40-year-old still deserves a place in the national team for the upcoming World Cup. However, the Spanish coach made it clear that the main criterion for picking players remains current performance, not their age or reputation.
" We only evaluate what happens in the moment. Decisions are made from match to match and the focus is always on the next performance. Whoever performs the task better on the field has the most chances to play ," Martínez declared.
The Portuguese coach also spoke about the changes modern football has brought, emphasizing the importance of the whole team due to the five substitution rule.
" Today you can change five players during the match and that makes the team that comes off the bench very important ," he concluded.
