Coach Fabio Capello has issued very strong statements against referees and the way VAR technology is used in modern football. The legendary Italian coach has harshly criticized the fact that former footballers and former coaches are not involved in decision-making, describing the current system as wrong and far from the reality of the game.
" Referees are the mafia. They don't want to rely on former footballers for VAR, on people who know the movements of football, the gestures that a player makes to stop or to help himself ," said Capello.
According to him, many decisions are incorrect because they are made by people who have never experienced the game on the field.
"They often make bad decisions because they haven't played themselves. A player gets hit in the face, they throw up and they whistle. Why do they whistle? It drives me crazy ," he said.
Capello has also proposed a concrete solution to improve the situation, suggesting the inclusion of former players or former coaches in the VAR decision-making process.
"They should appoint someone, a former player or former coach, to tell the referee: 'I don't think it's a penalty' ," Capello stressed.
He also revealed that in collaboration with UEFA, 20 penalty decisions were analyzed, which were reviewed by former players and former coaches. The result, according to Capello, was alarming: only 6 of them were actually penalties, while the other 14 were wrong decisions.
