Why do all Manchester United managers fail?
Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge. He had the worst points-per-game record of any permanent United manager in the Premier League era.

Reasons for his dismissal included "emotional and inconsistent behavior," a stubborn refusal to adapt his 3-4-3 system, and a public power struggle with the club's hierarchy over transfer policy.

Amorim won only 24 of his 63 matches, a win percentage of 38.1%, which was considered unacceptable for a club of Manchester United's stature.

But why does every manager fail at United?

The failure of many managers after Sir Alex Ferguson is attributable to some deep structural problems at Manchester United, not just the performance of individual managers.

Lack of Sporting Expertise : For a long time, the club lacked a coherent footballing structure, with commercial concerns often taking precedence and non-footballing experts making key decisions. The new INEOS ownership is attempting to address this by installing a new footballing hierarchy.

Reactive Appointments : The club has a history of choosing new coaches reactively to correct the mistakes of previous coaches, rather than adhering to a long-term, consistent philosophy.

Problems with Player Strength and Recruitment : High spending has not always translated into quality or the right type of players, leading to an unbalanced squad. Coaches have often had to work with players who did not fit their system or who were brought in from a previous regime, causing a "downward spiral" of constant rebuilding.

Extreme Pressure and Toxic Culture : The immense pressure and media scrutiny at United are intense. The club's environment has been described by some as a "toxic club culture" that makes it difficult for any manager to thrive and build stability.

Delay in Decision Making : The hierarchy has sometimes delayed the decision to fire underperforming managers, allowing problems to worsen and resulting in a significant points deficit that their successors must overcome.
