
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly spoken out in support of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior following an alleged racist incident during the club's Champions League match against Benfica.
The incident occurred in the second half of the match, when the Brazilian player reported a racist comment to French referee François Letexier. After the signal, the referee activated the anti-racism protocol and the match was interrupted for about 11 minutes.
In a public reaction, Infantino expressed himself "shocked and saddened" by the incident.
" I was shocked and saddened when I saw the alleged incident of racism against Vinicius Junior in the UEFA Champions League match between Benfica and Real Madrid ," he stated.
The head of FIFA stressed that racism has no place in sport and society, calling for concrete action and responsibility from the relevant parties.
" There is absolutely no place for racism in our sport and in society. We need all relevant stakeholders to take action and hold those responsible accountable ," Infantino said.
He added that FIFA, through the Global Stand Against Racism and the Players' Voice Panel, is committed to guaranteeing respect and protection for players, officials and fans, as well as taking appropriate measures when such incidents occur.
Infantino also congratulated judge Leteksier for implementing the relevant protocol.
" I congratulate referee François Letexier for activating the anti-racism protocol by using the arm gesture to stop the match and address the situation. FIFA and football show full solidarity with the victims of racism and any form of discrimination ," he stressed.
At the end of his reaction, the FIFA president reiterated his stance against any form of discrimination: " I will always continue to repeat: No to racism! No to any form of discrimination !"
The relevant authorities have not yet released additional details on the investigations related to the incident.
