"I'm just a grown man," 82-year-old returns to the field as a

" Playing on the field over 80 years old? Yes, it is possible. Of course, if you are in shape and train. After all, at that age you are just a grown boy ." This is what Lamberto Boranga, a doctor specializing in cardiology and sports medicine, says, who is preparing to return to the field as a goalkeeper with Treviso, in the first category, at the age of 82.

" Today, adults are more interested than young people, I am always on the move. I don't watch TV, I don't read the newspaper," he told the "Ansa" agency. "What would I say to a patient if he told me he wanted to become an athlete at the age of 82? I would ask him: Have you trained? Are you in shape? I would do all the necessary medical checks, as I do, and then, if everything turns out fine, I would tell him: yes, you can continue ."

Boranga has just signed a contract with Trevi: " I will play one match in October and then we will see. I have no intention of entering the locker room and commanding. In October I will also participate in the European Masters Athletics Championships in Madeira. I always train: long jump, triple jump, pole vault, in every discipline ."

For a month now, the cardiologist-goalkeeper has been training to return to the field: " I'm training with Marco Bonaiuti, who at Inter followed Samir Handanovic. I have good feelings, but I don't know if I'll be able to play the whole match ."

Boranga has chosen to return to Trevi, a club with which he is particularly linked. “ I was a bit distracted when I was young and football helped me immensely ,” he added.

" I don't want to look like a clown, if I play, of course the coach decides. I do it to emphasize that one thing is biological age, another is what is on paper. There are days when I feel 50 years old. I train four times a week, one day of which at maximum ."

Lamberto Boranga, at the age of 82, is back to putting on the goalkeeper's gloves. After having stopped in 2020, at almost the age of 78, with his last match for Marottese, he is now preparing to defend the goal of Trevi, the First Division team.

There is no advertising strategy behind this. Boranga trains seriously, under the care of Perugia's goalkeeper trainer, determined to be ready and competitive. The former professional, who continues to work as a specialist in cardiology and sports medicine, has no intention of becoming part of any joke.

Born in 1942, Boranga has spent decades in sports. He played at the highest levels with Perugia, Fiorentina, Reggiana, Cesena, Parma, accumulating over 100 matches in Serie A, to then continue among amateurs. Meanwhile, he has also distinguished himself in master athletics, winning world and Italian titles in the high, long and triple jump, with results that still resonate today.

The secret to his shape? " A little food, but the right one; no alcohol, no smoking, very little meat. Only soy milk and physical activity, including sex. A large and balanced breakfast, a chocolate/energy bar for lunch, and a light dinner. After meals, always a walk ."

He says that even now in the morning he does six somersaults (rolls) on sloping terrain, with a few seconds of rest, and that he focuses a lot on speed, essential for any athlete, even at almost 83 years old.

He is not worried about the reflex, but about the difficulty of jumping from one post to the other, but he is working on that too. “It is not the first time I have returned to the field seriously, I did it until five years ago. I am not rusty. Let's say I feel like a grown-up boy, age is a very relative concept .”

As a doctor, Boranga explains that a trained heart can cope even after the age of 90, if a healthy lifestyle is maintained: " The body's effort turns into pleasure, because chemical mediators and hormones such as GH, endorphins, testosterone, serotonin are released. In a trained body and accustomed to fatigue, the brain also thinks better and ages more slowly. It is the hormones that keep us young ."
