Fears of Argentina being favoured at the World Cup have been heightened after FIFA confirmed that Lionel Messi's favourite referee will referee England's much-anticipated semi-final against the reigning champions.
Messi's team was far from their best form before Wednesday's clash with the Three Lions, having struggled to get past Egypt and Switzerland in controversial fashion in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, respectively.
The manner in which these victories were achieved, with Egypt controversially having a goal disallowed while Switzerland saw striker Breel Embolo sent off, sparked widespread backlash and speculation that FIFA was conspiring to help Messi and Argentina win the tournament, an accusation the governing body vehemently denies.
And on Tuesday it was confirmed that Ismail Elfath will be the main referee, in what will be the most prestigious match of his refereeing career at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, as England aim to reach their first World Cup final since 1966, while Argentina seek to secure a second successive final.
The Moroccan-born American, who will be assisted by compatriots Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, will be in charge of his fourth match at this World Cup and for the first time this summer he will referee a match between England and Argentina. The fourth referee will be Italian Maurizio Mariani.
Elfath was the fourth referee in Qatar when Argentina beat France to win the 2022 World Cup, and his contacts with Messi have increased since the forward joined MLS side Inter Miami in July 2023.
A month after signing with Inter Miami, Messi helped his new team win the Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC, a match that was refereed by Elfath.
Messi scored the first goal with a powerful shot into the top corner from outside the box, before Nashville equalized. The match then went to penalties, which Miami won 10-9, with Messi converting his team's first penalty.
In fact, since his arrival in the United States, Messi has been tried four times by Elfath – and has won all four times.
In addition to the aforementioned Leagues Cup final, Messi has also scored four goals in the three other MLS matches that have been refereed by Elfath.
And England players should beware, as Elfath's MLS stats this season show that he doesn't hesitate to bring out the yellow card pad.
In the 10 matches he refereed, before the season was interrupted for the World Cup, he gave 41 yellow cards, sent off three players with red cards and awarded three penalties.

Responding to criticism of the arbitration, Collina rejected the allegations against his staff and highlighted the wider consequences they have for the accused individuals.
Asked by FIFA.com how he assessed the World Cup so far, FIFA's chief refereeing officer said:
"Let's start by saying that we have already played 50 percent more matches than at the 'Qatar 2022' World Cup, and there are still eight very big matches left to play. Overall, we are satisfied. However, when such a large number of matches are played in a relatively short period of time, it is normal that some things do not go as expected. When this happens, referees are willing to work even harder to ensure that they are fully prepared for the next match. Of course, constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded accusations have no place in our sport. No one can question the integrity of referees of World Cup matches. When this happens, it can provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is not right. Also, no one can claim that FIFA refereeing can be influenced by anyone, not even FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
