The Real Madrid team has announced the passing of one of the most emblematic figures in its history, José Emilio Santamaria, who passed away at the age of 96.
Santamaria was one of the main pillars of Real's defense from 1957 to 1965. During this time, he contributed to winning six La Liga titles and four European Cup trophies, being part of one of the most successful eras of the Madrid club.
Before moving to Spain, he had a distinguished career with club Nacional in Uruguay, where he won five championship titles between 1950 and 1957.
Born in Montevideo, Santamaria played 25 matches for the Uruguayan national team. He then switched sides and played 16 matches for Spain, starting in 1958.
Nicknamed "The Wall" for his defensive consistency and reliability, he retired from football in 1966. He then devoted himself to coaching, managing Espanyol for six years (1971–1977) and leading the team to the top four. He also served as coach of the Spanish national team from 1980–1982 and led the team to the 1968 and 1980 Olympic Games.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez expressed his condolences, describing Santamaria as one of the club's greatest symbols.
" He was part of a team that will remain forever in the memory of the fans and the entire football world. Together with Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Francisco Gento and Raymond Kopa, he helped build the myth of Real Madrid ," Pérez declared.
La Liga also reacted with a message of condolence, expressing its pain over the loss of a great football figure and sending condolences to his family and friends.
