After the match, we are not talking about the performances of the winners of the challenge, Steffen and Mahmud, but also the Serbian fans, who had traveled to this hellish transfer.
Although there were more fans in the "Bernese Oberland" than the Kuganese, the Serbs attracted negative attention in this match. Things would get really ugly after the break between the two halves. After 50 minutes of play, "Kosovo is Serbia" echoed several times in the stadium.
The background of this remains the international conflict between Kosovo and Serbia. After the fall of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia removed the autonomy of Kosovo. At the beginning of the 1990s, opposition protests started in Pristina, which ended with the great Kosovo war.
NATO intervened and carried out airstrikes in Belgrade. Before, during and after the war in Kosovo, more than 13,000 people were killed, or are still missing. Hundreds, thousands of Kosovars fled their country. Kosovo declared its independence in 2008 and has been recognized by 115 countries. To this day, Serbia strongly resists this. Many Serbs also do not recognize Kosovo as a separate state.
The fact that there are four players with Kosovar roots in the Lugano team, goalkeeper Saipi, defender Hajdari, midfielder Bislimi and striker Vladi, probably fueled the hatred of the fans from the Serbian capital.
