The Albanian national team will travel to Poland on March 26, facing a historically familiar challenge: the fight for a place in the World Cup. The confrontation with the Poles brings back memories of another important moment for Albanian football, that of 1984.
At that time, Albania was playing in the qualifiers for the "Mexico '86" World Cup, facing one of the strongest teams in Europe in the city of Mielec.
Poland at that time was represented by big names like Zbigniew Boniek, European champion with Juventus, as well as other prominent players like Zmuda, Dziekanowski and Smolarek. Most of this team had reached third place in the 1982 World Cup.
However, the Albanian representative did not step down in the face of this opponent.
Former footballer Agustin Kola remembers the atmosphere of that time:
" When we went out, we thought about other things, but on the field we gave our best. We had no pressure from the coach ."
In that match, Kola scored in the 75th minute, giving Albania a temporary advantage. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, a result that remains one of the most important in the history of the national team.
After a draw in Poland, Albania managed to defeat Belgium in Tirana, entering the real race for a World Cup qualification for the first time. However, a loss to Greece later ended this journey and the dream remained unrealized.
After more than four decades, history repeats itself. Albania, led by Silvinjo, with players like Asllani, Broja and Muçi, faces Poland again at a key moment in the qualifiers.
According to Agustin Kola, this time the psychological balance may be different:
" The pressure is on Poland. It's harder for them to lose to us than it is for us to lose to them. We have less to lose ."
