World Cup "Play-off", Gianni de Biasi: If we get past Poland, we win

Gianni de Biasi believes that if Albania beats Poland in the first play-off match for the World Cup, there is a chance to win in the final match, against Ukraine and Sweden.

Former national team coach, in an interview for the "Real Story" show on ABC News, de Biasi said that he has no ambition to lead Albania.

Excerpts from the show:

Sokol Balla: We have to beat Poland in Warsaw, which seems very difficult. If we go through, we have to beat Ukraine or Sweden, which has the two most expensive strikers in the Premier League today.

Gianni de Biasi: I also beat Sweden with Azerbaijan 3-0. I believe that they are two very difficult matches, I have the impression that the 'little boy' that Barcelona has ahead is not at his best, but we will play and we can play as equals even though we are playing on their field, then it is to see who qualifies. If we pass Poland, we will also pass the second one, but we have to arrive well by March, not have any injuries, we have great chances.

Sokol Balla: I think that every time you come to an event, and you always come invited by the Federation, how do you think Sylvinho feels every time he sees you? He has also built a very good team.

Gianni de Biasi: Sokol, I have no ambition to lead Albania again, if I come here, I come for my friends, the president of the Albanian Football Federation, you are my friend, everyone I have had the opportunity to know in these 5 and a half years. I have no envy, I have no interest, he has done exactly what I did, he took the team to the European Championship, now he is trying to take it to the World Cup, and for us I hope he succeeds. I will be more than happy, I do not even envy him at all. I will be very happy.

Sokol Balla: You are in the role of the spiritual father of Albanian football, but I was asking how you think a coach who has had as much success as you feels, but was not the first. I don't think Sylvinho is afraid of a challenge, but maybe he feels a little bit of your shadow.

Gianni de Biasi: I am convinced that he does not feel my shadow. He is younger than me, he has the whole road ahead of him, and I wish him to have as many fields as possible than mountains. He should get the greatest pleasure, he is a capable person, both when he was a player and now as a coach. He is also experiencing something that he did not imagine, he hoped for, but he did not imagine. He is a coach who is proud of the work he has done and can walk with his head held high. I raised a toast with both the Prime Minister and Sylvinho, it was something very beautiful, regarding the successes that have happened with the national team.

Sokol Balla: You said yourself that Sylvinho is a coach who has created his own identity, even with our national team, but can our football itself create its own identity? It is based on talented boys who come from the diaspora and very few of them from teams within Albania. Quality players can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Those who play with the national team today, like Muca or someone else.

Gianni de Biasi: To say that the Albanian championship is not at the same level as those played abroad. And so we must say that we coaches seek to get the best, Italy does that by playing with players from high-standard teams. At one time, Italy did it with players who were within the teams, but to open horizons and look beyond the garden because new opportunities may come.

Sokol Balla: We saw the example of Italy, Spalletti failed with the National Team, while Gatusso had great success.

Gianni de Biasi: I believe the difference is that Gatusso has always had mid-level teams, but now he found Italy that was even beaten by Norway. It becomes more difficult for the coach, you can be the biggest motivator, but the difference is made by quality players, the more you have, the more you will make a difference. I believe that today in Italy we have an interesting national team because we have a good, strong goalkeeper, a good defender. We have the players, but when we put them together we don't manage to get the quality product from them. Spalletti is good for club players, but when I saw the results with Italy, with those players he could do better.

Sokol Balla: Imagine what a World Cup with Albania would be like, but without Italy

Gianni de Biasi: I wouldn't be embarrassed at all who I would cheer for. It would be something extraordinary, but it would be a huge disaster for us for Italy to be out of the World Cup three times, I hope Rino takes us to the World Cup.
