With only a few days left until the start of the 2026 World Cup, one of the most complicated administrative and diplomatic issues outside the field of play has been resolved.
The Iranian national team, which was in serious danger of not participating in the group stage matches due to problems with travel documentation, has received approval to enter the United States of America.
The Iranian delegation had been stranded for days in Ankara, where the players and technical staff had surrendered their passports to the American Embassy immediately after a friendly match held in Antalya, Turkey.
The situation became even more problematic due to the World Cup draw. Although Iran had secured visas and a training base in Tijuana, Mexico, all three Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt were scheduled to be played on American soil, specifically in Los Angeles and Seattle. Without American visas, the team's participation in the tournament was seriously in question.
Faced with the risk of an incident of international proportions and after the intervention of FIFA structures, the issue was raised at the highest political levels. The White House confirmed through an official statement that visas for the Iranian delegation had been approved and issued.
The decision by US authorities has ended the uncertainty surrounding the team's preparations. The Iranian national team is expected to travel to Mexico this Saturday, where they will carry out the final phase of preparations before their debut at the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for June 15.
