Indian police arrested the main organizer of Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata on Saturday and confirmed that a written commitment has been sought to refund the ticket money of thousands of fans affected by the chaos at the event.
Police authorities reported that the organizer was arrested after an official complaint was filed regarding the riots that broke out at the Salt Lake Stadium, where the crowd threw objects onto the field out of frustration over the Argentine star's brief appearance.
West Bengal police chief Rajiv Kumar explained at a press conference that the outbreak of violence was the result of a misunderstanding regarding the player's participation.
“There was some anger or anxiety among the fans who thought he wasn’t playing. The plan was for him to come here, say hello to everyone, meet a few people and then leave, ” Kumar explained, detailing the disagreement that led to the violence.
" The organizer is providing written confirmation to those affected that tickets sold should be refunded. The situation is now under control and we have already arrested the organizer ," he stated.
The police intervention comes hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly apologized and ordered the formation of a commission to investigate the mismanagement.
The country's central government has called the event "robbery", accusing the organizers of demanding excessive prices for a show that lasted 22 minutes and ended with the emergency evacuation of the footballer.
