A staff member at the luxury Paris restaurant where tennis legend Serena Williams was allegedly denied access said one of her colleagues did not "recognise" her.
Williams created a storm of controversy when he wrote in X that he had been unable to enter the Peninsula restaurant in Paris.
" I have been denied access to eat in an empty restaurant with nicer seats, but never with my children ," Williams wrote in X.
Maksim Manevi, a worker at the Peninsula restaurant, told Variety that Williams was with another woman and a stroller and looked "unfamiliar." Manevi said that she was not working when the great tennis player came to the restaurant.
" When she came, there were only two tables available, and they were reserved by hotel customers ," Manevi told the media.
“ My colleague didn't recognize him and is horrified, but he told her what he would tell any other customer, to wait downstairs in the bar until a table became available. There was absolutely nothing personal here ," she said.
The restaurant also responded to Williams' criticism in X.
" Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight ," the hotel wrote on X.
“ Unfortunately, our bar was indeed fully booked and the only empty tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L'Oiseau Blanc, and they were reserved.
We have always been honored to welcome you and we will always welcome you again ," the response reads.
