Celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain's triumph in the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal have descended into chaos on the streets of France, with numerous clashes between fans and police leading to over 400 arrests.
According to the French Interior Ministry, 416 people had been arrested by early Sunday morning, 280 of them in Paris alone. Authorities had deployed thousands of police officers to prevent unrest, but the situation in some areas of the capital spiraled out of control.
Images posted on social media showed cars and electric bikes engulfed in flames, damaged roads, fireworks and flares lit, and businesses vandalized. On the famous Champs-Élysées boulevard, thousands of fans celebrated PSG's victory, while police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.
Authorities reported that six vehicles, two businesses and a bus station were damaged during the riots. Seven police officers were also injured.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the incidents "absolutely unacceptable," while the tensions have brought back into focus the problem of violence that often accompanies football celebrations in France.
Meanwhile, far-right leader Marine Le Pen reacted sharply on social media, declaring that "only in France does a football club's victory turn into riots."
Despite the incidents, PSG is expected to hold its victory parade on Sunday in Paris, with the players marching through the area near the Eiffel Tower and then being welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron.
We recall that PSG's European triumph a year ago was also accompanied by tragic events, where two people lost their lives, including a 17-year-old.
