800 prisoners on strike in Greece! Cause, denial of parole and increase in

Since July 19, about 800 convicts in Greek prisons, among them many Albanians, have gone on a hunger strike.

They complain that their rights have been violated by the frequent changes made to the penal code in Greece. The prisoners claim that Greek justice does not recognize their right to parole and is holding them in prison illegally.

Through this strike, they demand to be treated with the old criminal code with which they were sentenced and not according to the recent changes that increased the years of the sentence and postponed their parole. Two of the Albanian convicts in Greek prisons, who have been on hunger strike for 4 days, have contacted the Top Channel editorial office.

" In 2022, they published a new criminal code, they increased it to 19 years, that is, 6 months before release, to 25 years in prison ," said one of the prisoners.

" Then you worked as much as you wanted, while now you have the right to work only three months a year. A jailer does something and everyone pays for it. One thing happens abroad and they change the law. We want the law as it was in 2019, when we were convicted ", said another.

Another of their demands is that in the drafting of various regulations that limit the rights of prisoners, a distinction should be made between criminals and femicides, rapists and pedophiles and other persons who commit criminal offences.
