The fear of the possibility of eavesdropping on every person in Albania and creating a profile for everyone that would give easier access to hacking is a concern recently raised in our country. It was initially raised by democrat Saimir Korresh, who stated that the “DPI” device was used to eavesdrop on Albanians, including prosecutors.
Initially, Tomi Kallanxhi stated that the device is installed in five major internet companies that distribute services to other companies, describing it as a "filter" for each user.
"It is installed in 5 companies that provide all the internet to other companies. It is like a type of filter, that every call that goes through from every user, from every client, is in some way read, decrypted and analyzed in metadata. This metadata.. then it is not known if the software uses it, where it stores it..." , he said on the "Opinion" show.
-But who uses this device?
Kallanxhi says that this is an enigma, adding that "it's all underground."
Cyber researcher, Trim Radoja, stated that through this device, it is practically impossible to intercept users' messages or calls, as it simply monitors internet packet traffic.
"You simply monitor the traffic of internet packets. If you want to see that a person is using a particular type of encryption, you simply look at the traffic and the form that the traffic takes. You can't open the packets inside to read the messages or video call. With DPI it's practically impossible. In fact, if you wanted to compromise or hack something, it would be easier to compromise the device than to deal with capturing packets in the air," Radoja explained.
On the other hand, IT expert Besmir Semanaj seems to agree with the cyber researcher, regarding the clarification that messages cannot be intercepted, but internet traffic is monitored.
" This device is not being used in the traditional way of interception, so let's be clear so as not to spread panic. It cannot open and view WhatsApp messages, it cannot view the e-mail that you are sending, because we are talking about encrypted traffic. The problem is the profiling of citizens. I guarantee this with the current technology that Albania uses, but also other countries that use DPI, we are not dealing with reading encrypted messages ," he said.
Further, Semanaj explains that there is a possibility of hacking Albanians, as due to traffic analysis, a detailed profile of each user is provided, starting from political, religious, and sexual beliefs.
"For me, the problem is bigger than intercepting a few messages. We are dealing with a lack of transparency, we are dealing with a statement that we were told that the equipment came for free. We do not know from which company in Israel and I do not understand how they can be installed in the heart of the network, equipment that will be returned after a year. We do not know who has access. Based on the official statement of AKSK, they were borrowed for a year. For me, this is the biggest scandal. Imagine seeing the traffic of every Albanian citizen for a year, where detailed profiling can be done based on AI procedures. We can have detailed profiling from political, religious, sexual beliefs, etc. So, we will have an entire population in the hands of an institution, whether national or international. So, is DPI used for hacking? It is being used. But, it is being used indirectly," he said.
