Germany-based environmental organizations EuroNatur and BUND are calling on the German authorities to cancel the consultancy mandate for Vlora airport from Munich airport, due to threats to the environment.

The organizations EuroNatur and BUND based in Germany, in a joint press statement on Wednesday, requested the withdrawal of Munich Airport (MAI) from the project to build Vlora Airport, due to the damage it is expected to bring to the environment.

Construction is taking place near the Narta lagoon, a protected area of particular importance for international bird migration in Albania, despite strong opposition from local and international environmental organizations.

After an expedition to the area, the executive director of EuroNatur, Gabriel Schwaderer, and the Regional Chairman of BUND, Richard Mergner, presented to the media the problems that this project entails.

"We have seen flocks of flamingos living there in the Narta Lagoon - the planes will fly right into this protected area," appealed Mergner.

"We call on the Bavarian government, the federal government and the city of Munich as shareholders of MAI to ensure that the consultancy mandate for Vlora Airport is canceled and that MAI withdraws from the project," he added.

While Schwaderer, the executive director of EuroNatur, called it "unthinkable" to build an airport in the middle of a protected area. "Even the European Parliament and the European Commission have strongly criticized the construction of the airport and have called on the Albanian government to stop this project, which is harmful to nature," he said, requesting that the EU's appeals not be ignored during Albania's membership negotiations. -'s.

In March 2022, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that Munich Airport would be the operator of Vlora Airport and used his name as a guarantee for the government's project standards. But according to environmental organizations, Munich Airport, a company with shares state and the Bavarian Ministry of Finance have denied this.

"MAI says it is acting in an advisory role," says the statement of the two organizations, which have raised concerns about the Albanian government's project with the German authorities.

"EuroNatur criticized the construction of the airport in a letter to Prime Minister (Bavaria) Markus Söder on February 9, where it also pointed out the involvement of the MAI," the statement continued.

The international organization EuroNatur has been active in nature conservation in Albania and supports its local project partners, PPNEA and AOS, in their efforts against the airport.

The organizations PPNEA and AOS launched a legal battle in November of last year to stop the progress of the construction of this airport, submitting a lawsuit to the Administrative Court against irregularities and legal violations in the government project.

The Narta Lagoon is located in the delta of the Vjosa River, precisely in one of the last untouched parts of the Albanian coast of the Adriatic. Vjosa has gained great fame this year: after ten years of campaigning by EuroNatur and its partner organizations Riverëatch and EcoAlbania, the river was declared the first Wild River National Park in Europe and put under protection by the Albanian government.

Munich Airport is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) with 51 percent owned by the State of Bavaria, 26 percent by the Federal Republic of Germany and 23 percent by the City of Munich./BIRN
