Valid rental contract ignored, police intervention turns into open act of censorship

Edi Rama takes hostage News 24

Political impudence has a name and a date: Edi Rama and Ardi Veliu, on the morning of August 9, used the State Police as an execution force to surround and disrupt the work of a national media outlet. News 24 journalists and Panorama group employees were forcibly removed from the building, their signal was cut off, and their equipment was seized, without any warning and in clear violation of the lease contract that guarantees their right to operate in that space.

Lawyer Marash Logu has published documents that refute the official justification of the government and “KAYO” sh.a. According to him, Panorama Group sh.a. has a lease contract for the property with no. 10/304, Cadastral Zone 8170, with an area of 15 thousand square meters (5858 square meters of building), valid until May 9, 2033, with a monthly value of 15 thousand euros. The Decision of the Council of Ministers no. 158/2025, by which “KAYO” received four properties in the same cadastral zone, does not include this property.

Faced with this fact, the question is straightforward: why did "KAYO" run by Ardi Veliu, with the support of the State Police, intervene to expel the journalists and shut down the broadcast? The answer, according to the lawyer, is only one: this action is not related to the law, property or contractual relations. The goal is censorship, silencing and extinguishing a critical voice.

This is a dangerous precedent. It shows that the executive branch is willing to violate valid contracts and use security institutions to shut down unwanted media. Reactions from domestic and international journalist organizations have described this intervention as an act worthy of authoritarian regimes, where free speech is extinguished by the force of the uniform.

In Albania, this happened in broad daylight, with cameras turned off and microphones muted, because the government did not want News 24's voice to be heard. And when the government decides to take a media outlet "hostage", nothing stops it except public reaction and international pressure.
