Three Romanian citizens are wanted after stealing money from 4 different ATMs in Tirana.
By hacking into computer systems, with cloned cards, they were able to withdraw sums of money from several ATMs in the capital.
IT expert Tomi Kallanxhi explained that the technique used by robbers makes it possible to clone the card data and copy the PIN.
He said that this method, which uses a special device, can only be applied to old ATMs, which are rarer, but not absent in Tirana and other cities of the country.
"It's an old technique, they put a device on the device where you put the card, that clones your card, and the same thing is put on the keyboard and they get the PIN. It is not the first case, in 2007 it was the first case in Albania, there was also in 2010 and now the Romanians came to us. These types of cards are cloned by a device that copies the magnetic stripe. It is applied to old ATMs, where the "skimmer" is installed. Big banks do not use these ATMs, but there are still some of them in Tirana and other cities of the country. This problem must be solved first by the banks, which must protect the safety of their customers", said the expert in an interview for Euronews Albania.
