Erl Murati, the editor-in-chief of "Gazeta Shqiptare" has spoken about the 'Beleri' case.
Invited to the "Opinion" column on News24, Murat said that the pressure that Greece is exerting is excessive and that this issue is turning into a political and diplomatic soap opera between the two countries.
So he added that Albania cannot be constantly threatened by Greece regarding our country's membership in the European Union.
"This is an issue that is turning into a political and diplomatic soap opera between the two countries, this is a legal, criminal issue. It is about a mayor who won the local elections for the Municipality of Himara, but he is accused of buying and selling votes. I am not a lawyer to judge Albanian justice, but as long as the stay in prison has been decided for him, whether he is guilty or not, this should be respected. There has been pressure on this issue, first it was the release, now the oath is required. From the political side, there is an increased pressure from Greece, which in my opinion is not fair. I do not believe that Beler's trial is delayed, as there have been other cases where there have been delays. It is not elegant for Greece to constantly threaten Albania for the EU membership process. I emphasize that the rights of the minority are not violated here, as currently the head of the Municipality of Himara is also a person from the Greek minority. But apparently Beleri is more trusted for Athens than the current mayor.
This issue belongs exclusively to Albanian justice. This man was caught in the act, according to justice. I don't know who the Greek paka is addressed to, the prosecution or Albanian justice? The official position of internationals is that this issue belongs to Albanian justice. I believe that even Edi Rama wants to be himself, his hands are tied and he can't do anything", said Murati.
