Tonight's guest on the "Të Pashoq" podcast was Pamflet editor Gjergj Zefi. He provided an extensive analysis of international developments that are changing the course of global power relations and could have direct consequences for the Balkans.
Zefi focused attention on the silence of Russian President Vladimir Putin after the United States’ attacks on Venezuela, a country where Maduro has historically had strong support from Moscow and Beijing. He suggested that this silence suggests something more than just a lack of official reaction: a “silent pact” between Putin and Donald Trump, at least in strategic terms. According to him, this pact is worrisome for the Balkans.
-Why do you think there is a silent Trump-Putin pact on Venezuela?
Gjergj Zefi: What impresses me and makes me think that this is a silent pact is the silence of Vladimir Putin. We must bear in mind that Maduro has been one of the people with the most support from Russia, but also from China. And the silence shows that here we are dealing with a pre-written agreement or a silent pact. And this scares me, not because of what happens in Venezuela, because Venezuela is very far from us, but because of what could happen tomorrow in the Balkans.
And, besides this, now I take the opportunity to tell you, don't forget, in 2025, on August 15, 2025, Putin and Trump met. And don't forget, on October 29, 2025, Dodik, Milorad Dodik, was declared non grata. So there is an element here and non grata is not that everyone was declared non grata. Only Dodik was declared non grata. I think this is also an agreement between Putin and Trump. To leave space for everyone. And this is the biggest problem that the Balkans have today. Because, I see that Serbia and Bosnia are already under the direct influence of Putin. And if America continues to remain silent, we have washed our hands of it.
