At a time when the special commission set up by the Ministry of Interior is expected to begin interviews with the 14 candidates for head of the State Police, Prime Minister Edi Rama has called a meeting with Ministers Besfort Lamallari and Toni Gogu, as well as Deputy Ministers of Interior Anisa Ruseti, Xhemal Qefalia and Silva Caka.
Sources inform me that in this meeting, called by the Prime Minister, the new director of the State Police is being discussed, while it appears that the final instructions regarding the selection are being given.
The fact that one of those present at the meeting with Rama is also part of the special commission reinforces the idea that has been circulating for days that the vacancy for the Director General of Police will be passed through the Prime Minister's office.
The competition was opened immediately after Ilir Proda's departure from the post of police chief, and the lack of security measures at the former villa of former dictator Enver Hoxha during an opposition protest was used as a reason.
The Special Commission at the Ministry of Interior consists of Deputy Minister of Interior Silva Caka, Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior Kledia Ngjela and Head of the AMP Eduart Merkaj. They will evaluate the candidates presented and then a ranking will be made with points for each of them, based on leadership skills, experience, previous evaluations in the roles they have had, but also on what they will offer in the leadership position, if they are declared the winner.
Two candidates, Suela Sulkaj and Ejona Gurbardhi, who had not previously been part of the State Police structures, were disqualified from the competition after a preliminary verification.

Everything in this final phase has to do with the fact that regardless of the assessment that the Commission may make, the name that will be forwarded for approval will be selected by the Minister of Interior, who then proposes it as a candidacy.
Currently, the State Police is led by the commander, Sokol Bizhga, who holds the functions of Deputy Director General. The race for the new head of the State Police includes several of the directors of the Regional Police, as well as one of the Deputy Directors, Neritan Nallbati. Likewise, Rebani Jaupi, Saimir Boshnjaku, Skënder Hita and Tonin Vocaj, are some of the other experienced names competing for the position of Director General of the State Police, and who have previously held leadership positions and have aimed for this position.
What is noteworthy is that in recent years, none of the general directors of the State Police has been able to complete the full 3-year mandate, as provided for by law. Gledis Nano was dismissed from office a few months after receiving the appointment, while previously he was part of the anti-terrorism leadership team. Ilir Proda, who replaced him in this position, was also dismissed by the Prime Minister without completing his mandate.
