"Ismail Kadare loved even in Germany", the German translator: He left

The translator of Ismail Kadare into German, Joachim Röhm, affirmed in an interview for DW that with his death, not only a great writer of world caliber, but also a guiding figure for the entire Albanian nation, leaves.

Thanks to Kadare, Rohm said, Albania remained focused on Europe during the transition from communism to a free society.

"The loss is great, not only literary. I have many valuable memories, from more than four decades that I have known him personally, but they cannot be summed up in a few words", he says, further confessing that their relationship had been complex, always open and honest.

"In Albania we always met, when I went to visit either his house or the cafes he loved so much. I can say that a friendly relationship had been established between us. Sometimes he disagreed with my opinions, but you could discuss anything with him. As a translator, I appreciated the opportunity to always ask him, but he never interfered with my work," he said.

Asked which book of Kadare's best showed the mastery of his pen, the translator mentioned the volume "Royal Sleep Steal" and novels such as "Winter of great loneliness" and "Concert at the end of winter", which as he said show that he felt confident even in more complex forms of writing.

But for him, the book he loves the most is "Chronicle in stone", the first novel of the genius of Albanian letters that he had translated into German, and which he describes as the most intimate and warmest work of the great writer.
