The Commission for the Protection of Judges has imposed additional security measures for the judge of the Special Court, Irena Gjoka, following indications of her being at risk. The decision was taken at a roundtable attended by representatives of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, members of the High Council of Judges, the head of the Special Court, Erjon Bani, as well as officials of the State Police.
According to the decision, in addition to the guard tasked with protecting SPAK judges and prosecutors, officers from the special protection unit will also be deployed to Gjoka, increasing the level of physical security for her.
Official sources indicate that data on threats and concrete indications of danger to the judge are kept confidential for investigative and security reasons. However, this is not the first time that Gjoka has been placed under protection. She has had security measures before, due to her duties as deputy president of the Special Court and her involvement as rapporteur in sensitive cases, including the “Partizani” file.
Even at that time, at the height of the public debate and accusations against her, institutions assessed that there was a potential risk, assigning her a bodyguard.
Cases of enhanced protection for judges and prosecutors are not isolated. Currently, judge Gentian Muça is also under special protection from the state, after a quantity of TNT was placed in the vehicle she and her prosecutor husband were using about five years ago.
Also on the list of persons assessed as at risk is the former judge of Shkodra, Tonin Stërkaj, in whose apartment an explosive substance was thrown, while the perpetrators of this event have not yet been identified. Despite being dismissed from the vetting process, the High Judicial Council has assessed that the risk to him remains, which has led to the continuation of protective measures.
According to sources, most of the people receiving special protection are SPAK prosecutors, as well as several district prosecutors, including three in Elbasan, one of whom has been transferred to Tirana for security reasons.
The decision to increase measures for Judge Gjoka comes at a time when justice institutions continue investigations into sensitive issues related to organized crime and high-level corruption.
