The Appeals Court of Appeals decided today to uphold the First Instance decision, rejecting Veliaj's appeal for the suspension of pre-trial detention terms.
The review of the request had been postponed earlier due to a procedural irregularity. The summons against Veliaj did not bear the signature of the director of Durrës prison, which made the notification invalid.
The suspension of deadlines is related to the postponement of the trial by the defense and other procedural requests submitted during the hearings.
A day earlier, Veliaj's lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, publicly reacted to the way the process was conducted. He stated that the court had requested 35 files with digital evidence on CDs and USBs, which, according to him, were not opened and not evaluated, despite the fact that there is a court decision for them.
Ndreca stressed that these materials were not made available to the defense and that Veliaj himself did not have the technical ability to review them. He accused the court of refusing to verify the state of the evidence, not presenting it at the hearing and considering the deadlines for reviewing it to have expired.
In this criminal proceeding, only Erion Veliaj is under the measure of "prison arrest". The other persons are under lighter security measures, including Ajola Xoxa. A hearing is expected for the latter at the Constitutional Court, following her request to annul three lower court decisions.
