As the electoral campaign has ended and the new Parliament has been formed, another statistic raises questions about the effectiveness of the way parties solicit votes: spending on online advertising.

A total of $167,069 was poured into the online campaign by political parties and their candidates, the vast majority for advertising on Facebook. And the leader in this spending race is the Democratic Party, which invested $43,873, to end up with a disappointing result of only 50 seats – one of the heaviest losses in its history.

Another name that stands out is Agron Shehaj with the "Mundësia" party, who spent $39,014 to win only 2 mandates. A heavy bill for such a modest result.

The list of the 10 biggest spenders on online advertising also includes politicians who failed to enter the Assembly, such as Grigels Muçollari with $13,811, or those who regained their mandate, such as Jorida Tabaku with $10,957 and Belind Këlliçi with $8,736.

From the ranks of the Socialist Party, investments have been modest: Vullnet Sinaj with $9,278 and Pëllumb Seferi with $9,086.

Ironically, the Socialist Party, which is not among the big spenders on online advertising, managed to secure its fourth term in power – proof that in Albanian politics, votes cannot be bought with online advertising.

This 2025 campaign is turning out to be more of a lesson for the parties than a voter race: high spending on "likes" does not translate into mandates.
