After the confrontation in the Appeal for Freedom, Irena Gjoka decides whether the file will go to trial
Today will be a very busy day for former President Ilir Meta. After spending nearly a year in prison, Meta has two important battles today in the Special Court and the Court of Appeal, where it will be decided firstly whether the case against him will go to trial and secondly whether or not he will be released from prison.
To be more precise, Meta has appealed his security measure and a hearing will be held today to decide whether he will be free or continue to remain in prison.
On the other hand, today the next preliminary hearing against Meta, Kryemadhi and the other defendants is expected to take place at the GJKKO, where Judge Irena Gjoka will decide whether the case will proceed to trial or be returned for reconsideration.
The previous preliminary hearing was postponed due to the absence of Monika Kryemadhi's lawyer. During the hearing, Judge Gjoka also decided to suspend the detention terms for former President Meta.
In the last session, SPAK announced new evidence, a letter of intent from the US related to payments in the lobbying case.
On August 29, the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime closed the investigations and sent former President Ilir Meta, his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi, the latter's mother Fatime Kryemadhi, Pirro Xhixho and Ema Çoku for trial, as part of the investigation into corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets for the CEZ-DIA affair and lobbying in the US.
The SPAK investigation began in 2019 and expanded in subsequent years based on various reports, which were merged into a single one in 2024.
According to the indictment, Meta is accused of corruption in 3 different cases, 2 of which he committed in collaboration.
The former President is accused of passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials, money laundering, and failure to declare assets.
His ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi is accused of passive corruption of senior state officials in 2 cases, money laundering and failure to declare assets.
Pirro Xhixho is also accused of passive corruption of high-ranking officials committed in collaboration.
Meanwhile, Monika Kryemadhi's mother, Fatime Kryemadhi, is accused of money laundering, along with Ema Çoku.
SPAK reports that investigations have revealed that Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi, by exploiting their political power and influence, have favored certain businesses in exchange for monetary benefits.
Documented episodes show the above 5 defendants have collaborated in corruption and money laundering cases.
To complete this file, SPAK says it has collaborated with authorities in the US, Austria, Italy, San Marino and Cyprus.
