The Court of Appeal has released the former mayor of Kukës, Safet Gjici, from prison.
The former mayor of Kukes was convicted of abuse of office after a sex scandal in the office.
Gjici had about 8 months left to serve his sentence. He was released due to his deteriorating health.
He had submitted a request to the Elbasan Court for conditional release twice. According to the lawyer, the former mayor of Kukës suffers from cardiovascular system problems, aortic enlargement and severe diabetes. The lawyer stated that Gjici had suffered from these problems before, but the aggravated psychological state in prison has further aggravated his health condition.
Safet Gjici will remain in his apartment, forced by the court's decision, to complete the remaining time of his sentence. Thus, the former head of the Kukes Municipality will complete the remaining part of his sentence outside the cell, but under supervision.
