Greek media: Greece does not agree with Albania's EU membership process

Diplomatic sources from Brussels reconfirmed on Tuesday Greece's position that it will not accept Albania's EU membership process if there is no progress on the issue of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.

The Greek position communicated to the Albanian side emphasizes a clear movement towards restoring the political will of the Himarjot electorate. The case is considered a political-administrative decision, not a question of judicial independence. Greece requires the president-elect's permission to be sworn in and exercise political rights.

The EU's General Affairs Council discussed enlargement issues on Tuesday, including the possible break-off of Albania's accession to North Macedonia. EU leaders, in their draft Summit conclusions, reiterated their commitment to Balkan integration, calling for an accelerated accession process. Bosnia-Herzegovina's negotiations will begin upon sufficient fulfillment of the criteria, as outlined in the draft conclusions.

It is worth remembering that on Monday, December 11, Beler's request for a special permit to take the oath as Mayor of Himarë was dismissed by the Albanian Court of Appeal.

Beleri has been arrested since May as a suspect for suspected vote buying, while he was elected mayor of the city of Himara in Albania. / Ekathimerini
