"Air Albania", an inglorious end...
Turkish Airlines, Turkey’s leading air carrier, has launched daily flights between Istanbul and Tirana, taking over from Air Albania on this strategic route. The Turkish company has announced that the flights will operate daily from Istanbul Airport, once again including Tirana in its global network of destinations.
This development comes shortly after Air Albania suspended flights to Istanbul, at a time when it was reporting financial losses and faced the suspension of its operating license. Turkish Airlines, which held 49.12% of Air Albania's shares, has removed its hand from the company by selling its shares after the failure of this project.
Air Albania was founded in 2018 as a joint project between the Albanian government and Turkish Airlines, widely advertised by Prime Minister Edi Rama as the national airline that would give Albania the status of a new player in international transport. In fact, at a meeting with the Albanian diaspora in New York in 2024, Rama said that a direct flight with Air Albania to the US was being worked on: “When it happens, we will definitely do it here in New York.”
Today, this promise seems more like a political memory, as Turkish Airlines has taken full control of the most important route in the region. In an increasingly competitive market, the “national pride” Air Albania has disappeared from the routes without any public explanation from the Albanian government or aviation authorities.
The return of Turkish Airlines in this form is seen as a sign of the failure of the experiment with Air Albania, which began as a strategic alliance and ended as a quietly abandoned project. For Albanian and Turkish travelers, this is just a matter of flight choice, but on the political plane, it is another unfulfilled promise that adds to the list of failed projects of the Rama government.
