The Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment (IGJEO) has issued a notice on Facebook regarding the flood risk forecast, warning citizens of intense rainfall and a difficult situation in several areas of the country.
According to IGJEO, this afternoon (Friday, January 2) and tomorrow (Saturday, January 3) high-intensity rainfall is expected, mainly in the north and center of the country. In the Shkodra and Kukës regions, there may be flash floods of small mountain rivers and landslides. In the urban areas of these regions, localized flooding problems may also occur, depending on the state of the sewerage system.
The IGJEO forecast for the period 3–7 January 2026 indicates that intense rainfall, mainly in the north and south of the country, will cause dangerous increases in flows and levels in the Drin-Buna rivers, Lake Skadar, the Mat, Shkumbin and Vjosa rivers.
Today and tomorrow, intense to very intense rainfall is expected in Shkodër and Kukës, while in the regions of Lezhë, Dibër, Durrës, Tirana and Elbasan, moderate to locally intense rainfall is expected, accompanied by thunderstorms.
In other regions, precipitation will be light to moderate. Snowfall is expected in mountainous areas and the Alps.
Temperature for January 3:
Coast: 10–16 °C
Lowlands: 7–15 °C
Mountainous areas: 3–11 °C
Wind: Today and tomorrow the wind is expected to blow moderate to strong on the coast.
IGJEO calls on citizens to be cautious, avoid unnecessary movements and follow the instructions of local authorities for their safety.
