Similar images of plastic bottles blocking sewers were captured during the floods, while now that the situation has calmed down, glass and other solid materials are covering beaches and the sea is returning them to shore after the rivers overflow, collecting them in the areas they pass through.
Environmental expert Meivis Struga cites these damages as evidence of a lack of waste separation at source, poor recycling infrastructure, and lack of law enforcement.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, in several reactions, blamed citizens for the waste thrown into drainage canals, calling it the cause of the floods, while in the first podcast for 2026 he warned of the strengthening of punitive measures for this phenomenon.
Expert Struga emphasizes that Albania has a legal framework that has been aligned with European standards since October, but the problem lies in its implementation in practice. He states that the principle: "The polluter pays" must be applied.
"Awareness, law enforcement and changing behavior towards the environment may be the only solution to avoid repetition of such scenes after every heavy rainfall ," he told "Ora News".
