Rexhep Metaj, father of the former President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Meta, has passed away at the age of 83.
The news was announced by Monika Kryemadhi, while details regarding the causes of death or the tribute ceremony have not yet been made public.
Meanwhile, former President Ilir Meta will be accompanied to Skrapar for the funeral ceremony, after receiving permission from SPAK.
His lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, posted a video on Facebook where he said he was talking to Meta in the "Jordan Misja" prison when he learned the bitter news.
"He showed a self-restraint to be admired," said Cakrani. "The President's eyes filled with tears but he held himself back. I would not have wanted to be present at that moment, but life and fate brought me to be present. It left me with a very bitter taste that I will never forget this moment. Anyway, condolences to President Mr. Ilir Meta for the loss of a loved one."
Ilir Meta has been in prison since October 2024.
