From Theth to Gjirokastra, around 2800 applications for the "mountain

Around 2,800 expressions of interest in just over 2 weeks since the launch of applications... The “Mountain Package” is luring Albanians. “We expect interest in the 'Mountain Package' to increase in the coming days. So far, the figures are encouraging, but the potential is even greater.

The reason is simple: Albania's mountainous areas, including those with rare natural beauty and cultural heritage, have been neglected for years. Compared to coastal areas, they have received less attention, both from the state and from private investors. This scheme is a concrete attempt to balance development and bring more economic opportunities to these isolated territories,” Enkelejd Musabelliu, deputy minister of MEKI, tells A2 CNN.

Abolition of property and infrastructure taxes along with exemption from Value Added Tax and Income Tax for a period of 10 years. This is the formula through which the government will try to entice citizens to invest in agritourism in Albania.

"We are currently at the stage where municipalities are identifying beneficiary areas, based on the natural, touristic and economic potential they offer. This is a very important part of the process, because the proper selection of the territory will guarantee that investments go exactly where there is a need and real development opportunities ," says Musabelliu.

Priority for investments through the "Mountain Package" will be given to those individuals who already use these areas. Those who have been using them for more than 10 years can purchase these properties for the symbolic price of "1 euro".

"Our goal is to give priority to those who know the terrain and have contributed over the years to keeping these areas alive. If someone has had a property or land in use for more than 10 years, they now have the opportunity to make it their own, for a symbolic price of only 1 euro. This is a concrete way to motivate staying in mountainous areas and to turn them into small development centers," says Musabelliu.

From zero property taxes to 1 euro, the 'Mountain Package' is emerging as a new economic and social opportunity for Albania's highlands. The challenge remains in implementation on the ground, where the history of Albanian policies has often stalled. But if citizen interest is accompanied by real institutional support, this program could be more than a package, it could be a turning point./ A2CNN
