From Monday there will be more delays in public transport...
As the Prime Minister talks about Transparency Boards regarding the increase in oil prices, it seems that the ones who will suffer are the citizens.
From Monday, transport associations warn that they will reduce the bus fleet by 30%, linking this decision to the inability to cope with increased costs. According to them, the price of oil has reached 217 lek per liter, increasing significantly since February 28, following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
The National Association of Urban Transport and the Association of Urban and Interurban Transport emphasize that this increase has directly hit the sector, which operates with regulated tariffs and does not have the space to cope with immediate changes in costs. According to them, oil has increased from around 145 lek per liter to over 210 lek, bringing a significant increase in operating costs.
In the public statement, the operators request concrete measures from the government: reviewing the fiscal burden on fuel, especially excise and turnover tax, removing VAT for public transport, and applying subsidies or compensatory mechanisms to guarantee the continuity of service without increasing ticket prices.
They warn that in the absence of immediate interventions, they will not be able to maintain the current frequencies and level of service, with direct consequences for citizens.
Meanwhile, the government has chosen to reinstate the Transparency Board, which sets fuel prices based on the stock exchange, import costs and profit margins. Authorities are warning of fines and punitive measures for entities that do not comply with the set prices.
Another announced measure is a 20% reduction in excise duty if the price of diesel exceeds 220 lek per liter, which would reduce it from 38.8 lek to around 31 lek per liter.
However, for operators, these measures remain insufficient to cope with the current crisis, while for citizens the warning is clear: fewer buses and more difficulties in movement.
