Journalist Klodiana Lala, analyst Enton Abilekaj and Andi Tela have spoken out against extending the investigation into former president Ilir Meta, who according to them is being held in prison without evidence.
Invited to the studio of the show "The Unexposed", analysts added that indefinitely postponing the investigation by keeping him in prison indefinitely is very prejudicial to the process.
Studio conversation:
Klodiana Lala : Meta is making a request for the replacement of the measure for the first time. Since one of the offenses was on the verge of the statute of limitations, this also prompted the prosecutors to consider him a defendant. His lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, uses two arguments. The first, during his detention, the prosecution should have informed the court about the actions taken, in four sessions and it did not. Cakrani considers it a violation and reads it as a lack of evidence and facts. The second, has to do with the fact that, in addition to Mr. Meta presuming it as a violation of his rights, he says that during the 8-month investigation period, Metaj was available, calmly waited for questions and confrontations, but says that the prosecution did not take any actions, which raises suspicions of a political background. He stops at several similar cases, such as the case of Thoma Gëllçi, and requests the termination of the measure or its replacement.
Enton Abilekaj : Endlessly postponing the investigation by keeping him in prison indefinitely is very prejudicial to the process in the first place. You put him in prison for a year and after a year you say: wait, I don't have evidence and I'll find the evidence and take him to court. Well, these months and years of prison, what happens if he turns out to be innocent. Either the prosecutor has decided that he is innocent, or he will be declared guilty.
Andi Tela : Beyond the populist arguments 'prison for politicians', we know in this case, for Meta to stay in prison, he must have a plan to escape. I believe not. Next, to intimidate witnesses and destroy evidence. Next, to repeat the same act, he has no power. These must be the ones to keep him in prison. You have to meet all three criteria together, because he is being kept in prison. None of these are met.
